OUR DIRECTOR

Grace Sokoya is a Professor (Gender & Family Studies) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and Professor of Nursing at the University of Jos, Nigeria. She is currently the Director of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). As a FUNAAB professor, her primary responsibilities include Teaching, Research and Extension.

She started her professional career from the lowest rungs of the ladder as a student Nurse in 1977, a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1980 and a Registered Nurse Educator (RNT) in 1984.  She rose to the position of Assistant Chief Nurse Educator with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, before transferring her 18-year career service to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in December 1995.  She is the Pioneer Programme Leader for the Gender Issues and Youth Development (GIYD) Programme of the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC) of FUNAAB, a position she successfully held from December, 1995 to October, 2013.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Education from University of Ibadan Nigeria, 2 Master’s and 2 Ph. D degrees. Her first Master’s degree is in Educational Planning and Policy from University of Ibadan; while the second is in Nursing, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. Her first doctoral degree is in Institutional Administration, from University of Ibadan, Nigeria (January 1990); while her second Ph. D is in Gender and Family Studies, from the University of Natal, Durban South Africa (December 2003).

She is a Professional Nurse and Gender Expert with 36 years of cumulative professional working experience with women and rural families, drawing from and contributing to bodies of knowledge in Nursing, Gender-based researches, Community Health, Management issues in Agricultural Extension and Family Studies. Her Inter-disciplinary researches focus the influence of mind-set (health, psychological well-being and self-reliance) and social interaction (gender and marital relations) on individual and household quality of life and productivity.

 

She has delivered several Key-note Addresses, Guest Lectures at Professional Continuing Education programmes and academic papers at professional conferences. She has published two textbooks and numerous articles in learned academic journals, across disciplines.  She is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM), and Fellow of the prestigious West African College of Nursing (FWACN).

OUR ACTIVITIES

  1. Preparation and Submission of Master placement lists to NUC and ITF.
  2. Sourcing and placement of students on attachment with employers.
  3. Placement of students on attachment with employers and working out tailor- made training programmes with the industry-based supervisors.
  4. Organization of orientation programmes for students, preparatory to Industrial Training in collaboration with ITF training officials as resource persons.

  7. Assessment and grading of students’ performance in conjunction with respective academic departments.
  8. Collation and submission of ITF form 8 to ITF Area Office at the end of each session.
  9. Facilitation of verification of students’ log book by ITF officials.

10. Facilitation and follow-up of Electronic Payments of students’ Industrial Training (IT) Allowance by ITF into individual students’ bank accounts.

11. Facilitation and follow-up of Electronic Payments of Supervisory Allowance by ITF into the University’s Bank accounts.

12. Participation and presentation of progress reports quarterly meetings with the ITF Area office and SIWES Directors/Coordinators of other tertiary institutions in the State.

13. Participation in ITF organized Workshops, Seminars and Conferences as relevant and appropriate.

Compilation of comprehensive reports on the scheme to the ITF at the end of each session.

ABOUT ITF

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) was established by Act No: 47 of 8th October, 1971 as amended by Act Cap 19 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria in 2011.  The enabling Decree vested ITF with the statutory responsibilities of manpower training and development in general, with the specific mandate to promote skills acquisition in Industry and Commerce.

The specific purpose for establishing the fund was to “promote and encourage the acquisition of skills in industry and commerce with a view to generating a pool of indigenous trained manpower sufficient to meet the needs of the economy”.  It was the first of three (3) Manpower Training and Development Agencies created by the Federal Government during the second National Development plan period (1970-1974).

OUR HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

In the early years of the establishment of FUNAAB, Students Industrial Training started under supervision of the Food Science and Technology (FST) Department for Food Science and Technology Students. During that period, the Agriculture students were trained by the Teaching Farm and Management Committee (TEFAMAC).  The Industrial training programmes were later harmonized into SIWES Unit under the Student Affairs Division with a substantive Coordinator. The UNAAB SIWES Unit was established in April 1997 and charged with the responsibility of handling all SIWES matters for the institution.  Following a policy statement and directive by the ITF to all tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the SIWES Unit was upgraded into a functional Directorate in August 2001, with a substantive Acting Director, a SIWES Officer, a Typist and an Office Assistant.

FUNAAB SIWES received the Best Performance Award in October 2008 for being the best University in SIWES activities during 2006-2007 academic session.
