PHILLIP Biola Barakat 

Short Profile

Dr. Biola B. Phillip joined the service of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta on November 14, 2001as
Research Officer I, with the Research and Development Centre (RESDEC). She applied for a lateral transfer
from RESDEC which had metamorphosed into the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and
Agricultural Research (IFSERAR) to the department of Economics, College of Management Sciences
(COLMAS) in September 2011.
Dr. Biola Phillip was born in Ejuku, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State on March 22, 1959 to
dary School, Kabba
(1972 1976), School of Preliminary Studies, Kano (1978 1979), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1979
1982), Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA (1984 1986), and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1993
2001). The qualifications obtained from these institutions included the West African School Certificate (1976),
Interim Joint Matriculation Board (1979), BSc. Economics (1982), MSc. General Graduate Studies (1986) and
PhD. Economics (2001).
Prior to joining the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Dr. Phillip lectured in the College of Chemical and
Leather Technology, Zaria (CHELTEC, 1988 -2000). At RESDEC, she was the Desk Officer for the On - farm
adaptive research on Improved Management Technologies for Striga in the derived and moist savanna
ecological zones of Nigeria, 2002 to 2007. At IFSERAR, she worked in the socio-economic program of the
Institute until her redeployment to the department of Economics, COLMAS in 2011. She served as pioneer
Head of department (in acting capacity) from September 2011 to July 2014. During the same period, she was
over - seeing the affairs of the Department of Banking and Finance on behalf of the Dean, COLMAS. Dr.
Biola Phillip was Acting Dean, COLMAS (2014-2017) and substantive Dean, February (2021 January, 2023).
Dr. Biola Phillip was promoted Reader in October 2011 and Professor (Development Economics) in October
2015. She has over 33 years teaching experience at different Institutions (CHELTEC, Fellowship at Yale
MacMillan Centre, FUNAAB and Babcock University). Her research has covered a wide range of
development issues including housing, employee welfare, gender and agriculture. She has supervised many
students at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. She has also engaged extensively in extension activities in
the dissemination of improved management technologies for Striga, and the establishment of plantain plantation for FUNAAB. She is a member of several associations and societies including the Nigerian Economic Society, the Association for the Advancement of African Women Economists and Organic Agriculture Project.
