CPT 302: INTRODUCTION TO CROP PROTECTION (3 Units)
Pest and Disease definition. History of Plant Protection.
Insect morphology and economic importance. Common insect pests of agricultural crops. Other pests of economic importance- rodents, birds, molluscs, etc.
Characteristics of Disease agents- fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes. Common diseases of agricultural crops.
Parasitic plants. Common weds of agricultural crops.
Crop protection methods- cultural, biological, legislation (quarantine), hosp plant resistance, physical, chemical, integrated pest management.
Practicals: Observation, description and identification of insect pest activities on crops. Collection of insects and preparation of specimens for insect boxes. Visit to insect museum. Identification of fungi, bacterial, nematodes and viral diseases of arable and permanent crops. Chemical control of pests and diseases of agricultural cros. Pesticide application, dosage calculations.
CPT 501: INSECT PESTS OF TROPICAL CROPS (2 Units)
Life Cycles and Economic Importance of Insect pests of Arable and Permanent crops in the Tropics (Maize, Cowpea, Cassava, Oil Palm, Cocoa, Cashew, etc.) Practicals: Observation, description and identification of insect pest activities on arable and permanent crops. Collection of insect pests of arable and permanent crops. Preparation of specimens for insect boxes. Visit to insect museum.
CPT 503: PRINCIPLES OF NEMATOLOGY (2 Units)
Life cycles and economic importance of plant parasitic nematodes of arable and permanent crops. Population dynamics of Nematodes and their distribution in space and time. Host-nematode interactions and density dependent factors.
Practicals: Extraction and identification of Nematodes from soils under bush fallow and from different monocrops and crop mixtures. Estimating nematode populations from the soil samples. Symptom Expression by nematode infected crops.
CPT 505: PLANT DISEASE EVALUATION (2 Units)
Pathogen and environment. Pathogenicity and pathogenesis; Isolation of fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens; Standardization of inocula load; Disease cycles of pathogenic fungi, bacteria and viruses of arable and permanent crops. Infection; factors affecting infections – direct and indirect; Parasitism. Disease Incidence and disease severity.
Practicals: Identification of characteristic symptoms of diseases of arable and permanent crops, Visits to field plots, Incubation and isolation of disease agents.
CPT 502: ECONOMIC ENTOMOLOGY (2 Units)
Principles and methods of Insect Pest Control: Biological Control, Genetic Control, Host Plant Resistance, Chemical Control, Environmental Control, Mechanical and Physical Control, Regulatory Control and Insect Pest Management. Beneficial Insects.
Practicals: Chemicals control of pests on agricultural crops; Pesticide application equipment, dosage calculations.
CPT 504: APPLIED NEMATOLOGY (2 Units)
Nematodes as agents for environmental monitoring. Principles and Methods of Nematode control and management including integrated management strategies and biological control. Resistance, tolerance, susceptibility and hypersusceptibility of host plants.
Practicals: Free-living, plant-parasitic and Nematophagous Nematodes in the soil and their ration of distribution. Simple experiment to demonstrate the effect of nematodes on selected arable crops in groups.
CPT 506: PLANT DISEASE MANAGEMENT (2 Units)
Principles and Methods of plant disease control; Host-pathogen Interactions; Disease Epidemiology, Disease Control and Management. (Eradication, Exclusion, cultural practices, use of resistant cultivars, chemicals control, biological control; integrated Approach to Disease management).
CPT 508: VERTEBRATE PESTS IN AGRICULTURE (2 Units)
Distribution and abundance of vertebrate pest species in Nigeria; factors predisposing Crops and stored produce to vertebrate pest attack; Assessment of vertebrate pest damage; Management and Control of vertebrate pests.
Practicals: Identification of vertebrate pest activities and damage on arable and permanent crops in the tropics. Assessment of vertebrate control methods in the field.
CPT 510: PESTICIDES IN AGRICULTURE (2 Units)
Chemistry and actions of Insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, nematicides, acaricides, herbicides, rodenticides, etc. Classification, formulations, applications, toxicological residues, environmental degradation, Pesticides residue problems in developing countries. Health and safety precautions. Uses and abuses. Pesticides: Hazards and Alternatives.
Practicals: Pesticide application, Crop protection equipment usage and maintenance. Practical health and safety precautions in pesticide application, protective clothing. Systematic movement of pesticides in plants/insects. Degradation of pesticides in soil and water.
