ARTICLE 1: THE POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL

(a) There shall be a Postgraduate School, which shall be responsible for the operation, co-ordination and quality control of postgraduate studies at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB).

(b) Postgraduate Studies shall include all academic and professional programmes which require student achievement beyond the undergraduate level in any field, generally leading to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s or Doctorate (Ph.D) Degree.

ARTICLE 2: THE POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL BOARD

The Postgraduate School Board shall be the governing body of the Postgraduate School.

(a) Membership

The Postgraduate School Board shall consist of the following members:
Dean, Postgraduate School (Chairman)
Deputy Dean, Postgraduate School
Deans of Colleges
Deputy Deans of Colleges
Directors of Institutes, Academic Centres and Units
University Librarian
Heads of Departments
Secretary, Postgraduate School (Secretary)

(b) Functions

The functions of the Postgraduate School Board shall be the following:

(i) To co-ordinate and harmonise all postgraduate courses, programmes and regulations in all the Colleges and Institutes/Centres of the University.

(ii) To monitor the conduct of postgraduate programmes in the Colleges with a view to continuously improving and maintaining standards.

(iii) To process recommendations from the Colleges concerning admission and registration of Students into the various programmes and to approve their general fields of study as well as the Supervisors that have been assigned to them.

(iv) To receive and process all papers/documents for conducting higher degree examinations, prepare reports for Senate approval of the results of all Postgraduate examinations and hence those candidates to be awarded the various Higher Degrees and Diplomas.

(v) At the appropriate time, to receive and consider applications for registration of titles of theses/dissertations, nominations for appointment as External Examiners of postgraduate programmes and theses, and prepare them for Senate approval.

(vi) To consider all matters that may arise in the course of the postgraduate work of any registered Postgraduate Student, including special requests for suspension of studies for acceptable reasons, conducting part of the postgraduate work in other Universities outside UNAAB, etc.

(vii) To continuously monitor and evaluate the trends in Postgraduate developments in and outside the country so as to make the Postgraduate programmes at UNAAB innovative, relevant and competitive.

(viii) To prepare and submit an annual report on Postgraduate programmes to Senate at the end of each academic session.

(ix) To consider all the matters referred to it by Senate.

(c) Meeting

(i) The Postgraduate School Board shall meet once a month as stipulated in the University Calendar.

(ii) The regular meeting of the Board shall be after at least seven days advance notice with published agenda which shall include the introduction of business from the floor.

(iii) The Dean may call a special meeting of the Board at short notice but the purpose of such a meeting shall be specified and  such business shall be the business of the day.

(iv) A special meeting of the Board may be called on a written request to the Dean by at least five members of the Board drawn from at least three Colleges provided that the other terms specified in Article 2 (c) (iii) are met.

(v) One third or the largest whole number less than 33.3% of the total membership of the Postgraduate School Board shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. ARTICLE 3: THE POSTGRADUATE ACADEMIC STAFF
Membership of the Postgraduate Academic Staff shall be open to the following categories of academic staff:

. Professors and Readers
. Senior Lecturers with relevant teaching experience and academic distinction.
. Other academic staff who meet at least two of the following requirements.

(a) Doctorate degree or its equivalent
(b) Rank of Lecturer II or higher
(c) Significant publications or experience in their fields of specialization.

. No lecturer may teach at a level higher than his qualification.


Responsibilities of the Postgraduate Academic Staff:

The responsibilities of the Postgraduate Academic Staff shall include:
(i) Teaching on a regular and continuing basis in the postgraduate programme of their department.
(ii) Supervision of postgraduate diploma, dissertations and theses.
(iii) Serving as advisors to postgraduate students
(iv) Serving on examination panels for postgraduate students.

ARTICLE 4: OFFICERS OF THE POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL

The Officers of the Postgraduate School shall include the Dean, Deputy Dean and Secretary:

(A) The Dean of the Postgraduate School

(i) Tenure of Office
(a) The Office of the Dean of Postgraduate School shall be an elective one, open to all professors in the University except those on visiting status.
(b) The tenure of office for the Dean shall be three years in the first instance.
(c) An elected Dean may seek re-election but no Dean may serve more than two consecutive terms.
(d) Members of the Postgraduate School Board shall elect the Dean from the rank of eligible professors.

(B) The Deputy Dean of the Postgraduate School

(i)    Election and Tenure of Office
(a) The Deputy Dean shall be elected by members of the Postgraduate School Board from the rank of eligible professors.
(b) The terms of office for the Deputy Dean shall be two years in the first instance.
(c) An elected Deputy Dean may seek re-election but no Deputy Dean may serve more than two consecutive terms.

(ii) Duties
The Deputy Dean shall preside at the meetings of the Postgraduate School Board in the absence of the Dean and undertake any other duties assigned by the Dean for the smooth functioning of the Postgraduate School.

(C) The Secretary of the Postgraduate School
The Secretary shall hold at least the rank of Principal Assistant Registrar, He/She shall work under the direction of the Dean.

ARTICLE 5: OTHER COMMITTEES

Any College offering postgraduate programmes shall have constituted a College Postgraduate Committee and Departmental Postgraduate Committees for Postgraduate Studies.

(A) College Postgraduate Committee

(i) The membership of the College Postgraduate Committee shall include all the Heads of Department and Departmental Postgraduate Co-coordinators in that College. The Chairman shall be the Dean of the College.

(B) Duties of the College Postgraduate Committee

(i) To co-ordinate postgraduate work in the College, including examinations.

(ii) To present candidates for admission, award of grants, scholarships and fellowships and the award of higher degrees and graduate diplomas to the Postgraduate School Board, based on recommendations by the Departmental Postgraduate Committees.

(iii) To prepare Annual Reports on postgraduate work for submission to the Postgraduate School Board.

(iv) To present External Examiners to the Postgraduate School Board, on the recommendation of the Departmental Postgraduate Committees.

(v) To carry out other functions assigned to it by the Postgraduate School Board.


(C)
Departmental Postgraduate Committee

(a) Membership and Governance
(i) The membership shall consist of all academic staff with responsibilities in the departmental postgraduate programme.
(ii) There shall be a co-ordinator appointed by the Head of Department
(ii) The Head of Department shall be the Chairman.

(b) Duties of the Department Postgraduate Committee
(i) To co-ordinate Postgraduate programmes in the Department
(ii) To collaborate with operators of other degree programmes
(iii) To present candidates for admission, award of grants, scholarships and fellowships and the award of higher degrees and graduate diplomas to the College Postgraduate Committee.
(iv) To recommend External Examiners to the College Postgraduate Committee based on the advice of the Supervisory Committee.
