The out-gone 2017/2018 Student Union of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAABSU) tagged “Team Rebirth” have brazenly displayed and demonstrated their love to the Visitor to the University and the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari by naming their pet project, a befitting Car Park after him.

Named as “The President Muhammadu Buhari Square Car Park”, the project which was the initiative of the immediate past Student Union was commissioned barely a day before the inauguration of the new Executives.

FUNAAB Bulletin observed that the Car Park is befitting, and it is the first edifice to be named after the Visitor and the nation helmsman by the Student Union.

For one, the Car Park is at a vantage position. It is located conspicuously and imposingly beside the Zenith Bank, and it’s noticeably adjacent the University Main Gate at the FUNAAB end of Camp/Alabata Road.

Better still, the Car Park is spaciously sprawling and adorned with a soothing and catchy shed with the captivating, alluring and bold picture of the Visitor to the University.

According to the out-gone Student Union President, Comrade Ayobami Popoola, the constructed park is in commemoration of the University’s Founder’s Day and her 30th Anniversary.

Speaking during the Commissioning of the Project by the Vice Chancellor, Comrade Popoola disclosed that the project worth about 5 million Naira was executed 70 percent using manual labour and it’s part of the Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility to the society.

The Park called “The President Muhammadu Buhari Square Car Park/ Bus Stop (PMB Square) holds two sheds with sitting areas to be named after the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako and one of their late colleagues Rt. Hon. Oluwafisayomi Adelaja.

The inscription on the sheds condemns the use of hard drugs, drug abuse, alcohol and cultism.

Revealing why the Park is named after the President, Comrade Popoola said “We named it PMB Square, having funded it by ourselves but we are drawing his attention to higher institution to know that the youth are leaders of tomorrow and by what we are doing, we are laying our foundation for tomorrow and it is time to take up the stage and step forward”.

He further appreciated the President for his good deeds and integrity over the year, calling on him to look into the issue of reviving the College of Management Sciences in the University.

The former SU President commended the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako whom he described as a leader per excellence and a father for his support and words of advice, particularly whenever the Union was disgruntled on any issue.

He assured that as ambassadors of FUNAAB the students would continue to make the University, society and the nation at large, proud.

In his Remark, the Vice Chancellor tasked the Student Union executives on quality leadership, stressing that there is no issue which cannot be solved by dialogue.

Professor Salako further disclosed that the University places premium on quality leadership, adding that Unionism should not be about tearing the world, quarrels and riots but rather constructive dialogue which will bring about solutions.

According to him, “There are Student Union in some Universities where they have made it a habit to always fight and disturb the system.  They will close down the university and you won’t graduate and when you come back after your quarrel or riots, other Unions will go on strike and you have multiple years to count. There are no challenges that cannot be solved through dialogue.

Professor Salako said that the University had always been responsive to the demands of students, adding that “We have accepted our errors as management whenever students came and argued reasonable. I will tell them, look, we are going to do something about it”.

Buttressing his point, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that “Recently, every generator on campus went down. The Management took an extra step to go and look for smaller generators at least to pump water in the Hostels. We could not provide electricity but at least we could provide water in the Hostels and if we were not responsive, we could have ignored all that and it could have led to some other things.

So the point I am making is that the idea that we must go and riot is wrong as some people may pick on the young ones because of their vulnerability and tell them the next thing is to destroy things. If you destroy a building that we have built, remember that, that is minus one among the facilities that you have in the University”.

He thanked the students for being responsible and advised them to always exercise patience whenever they make demands because the University Management must also ensure that due process is followed so as not to be found wanting with the law.

Professor Salako commended the SU for the donation which he said would greatly alleviate the challenges of commuters.
