Students and by extension, members of the University community, have been called upon to continue working with security officials, to expose criminally-minded people in the society. This call was made by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, during a courtesy call on him by FUNAAB Students Union (FUNAABSU) executive. The PPRO urged the students and members of FUNAAB community to help in identifying those pretending to be students and living among them, stating that criminals often work, based on information provided by people.

“Once you see anybody, who is not a student of your school living within the student-dominated area, provide that information to the Chief Security Officer (CSO). Students should work together with the police to fish out those pretending to be students of FUNAAB among them. Cooperate with the security agencies by assisting us because the police cannot know the terrain as much as those living there”, he added. Speaking on the security measures being put in place by the command, the PPRO stated that a temporary team would be dispatched for constant patrols in the students’ area, to keep the place fortified, adding that a new patrol vehicle would soon be given to the Harmony Police Division to increase productivity. DSP Oyeyemi noted that prior to now, a team of policemen was dispatched to patrol the area on a daily basis. He urged the students to feel free to visit his office. He added that undue harassment of members of the public by police was not condoned by the command, stressing that officer caught harassing students, should be reported to the right channel. The police spokesman assured that students would always be protected, adding that sources of information given by them (students) would never be disclosed.

DSP Oyeyemi called on the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to hold stakeholder meetings with hostel owners around the University community as part of moves to improve security. He advised the students against violent protests because such could be hijacked by hoodlums. Reacting to the PPRO’s address, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Babatunde Idowu appreciated the efforts of the command for the constant support, stating that students can be rest assured of adequate security. He charged the students to ensure that they always wear their identity cards, be well-dressed, and avoid walking around very late into the night. According to him, “students should properly identify themselves by making sure they wear their ID cards all the time. They should conduct themselves properly, be well-dressed, as this would make it difficult for them to be harassed. They should also make sure not to walk at unholy hours”.

He further stated that students had been advised to identify and report those pretending to be students in their vicinity”. FUNAAB’s Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, Mr. Peter Bolarinwa disclosed that the Vice-Chancellor had visited the Ogun State Police Command severally in the interest of both the students and residents within the University premises. The President of FUNAABSU, Comrade Adeola Ahmed stated that students would work closely with the police in exposing crime suspects. She lauded the command for its constant cooperation, appealing that the police should further strengthen security for the protection of lives and property.
