The College of Biosciences (COLBIOS) on March 25, 2025, concluded the 2024/25 edition of the Dean’s Football Cup. It was indeed an exciting tournament that brought together students from its four Departments which were Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pure and Applied Zoology, as well as Pure and Applied Botany, to compete in both Male and Female Football Tournaments.
This year’s tournament was historic as it marked the maiden edition of the Female Dean’s Cup, emphasising the College’s commitment to promoting gender inclusivity in sports.
During the Male Final, the match was an intense clash between the Departments of Microbiology and Pure and Applied Zoology, which ended in a penalty shootout. After a thrilling contest, Microbiology emerged as the champion, lifting the prestigious Dean’s Cup.
In a similar vein, the Female Football Tournament, making its debut this year, showcased incredible skill and teamwork. The Department of Biochemistry secured the championship, making history as the first-ever female winner of the Dean’s Cup.
In her address during the presentation of medals, the Dean, COLBIOS, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde expressed her delight at the success of the tournament and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting sports development in the College. She lauded the students for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and dedication to teamwork.
Highpoint was the presentation of medals and cash awards by the Dean to the athletes in recognition of their efforts, and also to motivate them to continue excelling in sports.
The event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of unity, teamwork, and the true spirit of sportsmanship. The tournament fostered unity among students and reinforced the importance of extracurricular activities in academic institutions.
With the resounding success of the 2024/25 edition, expectations are high for future editions of the COLBIOS Dean’s Football Cup, as the tournament continues to serve as a platform for talented student-athletes to showcase their abilities and build lasting memories.
Meanwhile, the tournament was graced by esteemed members of the College’s Academic Board, including the Deputy Dean, COLBIOS, Dr. Adejare Oloyede; Dr. Jamiu Akamo, Dr. Abidemi Ojo, and the College’s Sports Representative, Dr. Wasiu Abibu.
