The Director, Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research (IFSERAR), Professor Akin Omotayo, has tasked the 2013/2014 graduating students of the University on how to be relevant after graduating. Delivering a lecture titled, “Developing Skills Set for Excellence and How to Search for and Get Your First Job”, he challenged the students to go the extra mile, show enthusiasm and take charge of problems when they come in order to achieve excellence.
According to the Don, for one not to be caught in the web of unemployment or joblessness, Professor Omotayo charged the students to have passion for self-employment by learning and using the various skills they have; and if they seek paid employment, they should create their own curriculum vitaes or resumes and make use of social media such as LinkedIn, take part in internship as early as possible, find a mentor and join a professional development or industry group. He observed that graduating students in today’s market place required some basic skills which they should endeavour to acquire such as being computer literate, developing good written and verbal communication skills, as well as learning new languages.
The event, which was also organised to brief the graduating students on the changes in the process of mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, afforded the NYSC team, led by Mr. Adeniran Olayide, who is the Director of Ventures Management Department, NYSC Headquarters, Abuja to inform the students that the mobilisation process would now be done online, beginning with the 2014 Batch ‘C’.. Adeniran said that for a prospective corps member to get registered, such a person would make an online payment of Four Thousand Naira (N4,000.00) only, to get his call-up letter printed, which would afford them the opportunity to re-print their call-up letters anytime, anyday and from anywhere in the case of theft or loss, which was contrary to what was obtainable before, where a corps member would have to lose the entire service year if he/she should misplaced or loses the letter. He advised that to get registered, they would have to log on to www.nysc.org.ng or www.nysc.gov.ng and make use of a good cybercafé with the required facilities such a thumb-printing machine and webcam for picture capturing among others. Present at the briefing were the Dean, Student Affairs, Professor Yemi Akegbejo-Samsons; the Principal Assistant Registrar (Counselling), Mrs. Modesta Ofodile; and the Student Affairs Officer, Mr. Olaniyi Akomolafe .
