The Co-founder of BudgiT, Mr. Oluseun Onigbinde, has announced the launch of a ₦10 million Innovation Prize exclusively for students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). The prize, unveiled today, September 23, 2025, during a Colloquy held at the Green Chamber and themed “The Future of Engineers in Nigeria: Bright or Bleak?”, was designed to empower and reward groundbreaking student-driven solutions to real-world challenges.

Delivering the Keynote Address, Mr. Onigbinde underscored the vital role of Engineers in shaping Nigeria’s future, especially in an era driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). He noted that while not every graduate may remain in traditional Engineering practice, the problem-solving mindset and resilience cultivated through the discipline remain valuable across professions.

Challenging students to become “total students,” he highlighted five guiding principles for success, which are harnessing data for problem-solving, adopting interdisciplinary approaches, testing local solutions, embracing lifelong learning, and upholding integrity. According to him, Engineers remain the “heartbeat of production,” and competence combined with creativity would define their relevance in the global workforce.

Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Ag. Dean, College of Engineering (COLENG), Prof. Rasaq Adetunji, encouraged students to embrace the transformative power of AI as a tool for innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness. He expressed optimism that the future of Engineering in Nigeria is bright, provided graduates align with global technological trends.

The event ended on a celebratory note with a surprise birthday recognition for Mr. Onigbinde, who seized the moment to unveil the Innovation Prize for FUNAABites, a bold step that further positioned the University as a hub for innovation and creativity.

With this announcement, Mr. Onigbinde not only inspired students but also strengthened FUNAAB’s standing as a breeding ground for forward-thinking ideas that can transform society.
