Succor is coming the way of rural farmers, to assist them in their planting in and out of season in Abeokuta and beyond, due to the development of Low-Tech Affordable Drip System.

This cheering news was broken, during a Workshop, held recently in the University.

The Workshop, which was attended by rural farmers, through its Principal Investigator, Dr. J. K. Adewumi, educated farmers on the proper ways of utilizing the drip irrigation system, which he said, would cover a large farmland, affordable and durable, boosting the production of farm products during the dry season.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Development), Prof. Segun Lagoke said that the drip irrigation system became imperative due to the rise in cases of hunger and idleness amongst farmers during the dry season.

Prof. Lagoke implored the farmers to tap from the knowledge they would gain from the workshop and apply same for the use of their local environment.

In his contributions, Prof. Goke Bodunde, implored farmers to try out the drip irrigation system as it would help in reducing stress from the farmers. Corroborating him, Prof. Adekojo Waheed also encouraged the farmers on its usage, stating that no matter the challenges they faced at the initial stage of setting it up, they stood to reap the benefits on the long run.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Mr. Joseph Falodun from Odeda implored the University to help the farmers to learn the proper application of the system, to further enhance their knowledge.

Also speaking, Pastor Oyekunle from the Ogun State Agricultural Development Programme (OGADEP) appreciated the initiative and stated that the irrigation system was a welcome development as fears of most farmers during the dry season had always been how to fetch water to wet their farms, as the use of pumping machine sometimes destroy the farm land.

The Pre-Implementation Workshop/Stakeholder’s Meeting was held under the Competitive Agricultural Research Grant Scheme (CARGS) of the University.
