The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Intercollegiate Sports/Vice-Chancellor’s Cup ended on a good note on December 18, 2024, with a Final Match between the College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD) and the College of Biosciences (COLBIOS).
The event, which was organised by the Directorate of Sports and Wellness, was aimed at balancing students’ recreational activities with their academics.
Before the kickoff, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, underscored the essence of sports in a man’s well-being. He commended the Director of Sports, Dr. Samuel Olabanji, and his team for putting up the competition and tasked them to keep the FUNAAB sports torch burning.
During the tough, balanced, and tense-soaked match, the contending finalists in the football match played with dexterity and displayed skills on the pitch.
At the end of each half, the match ended in a goalless draw. However, COLAMRUD was able to snatch the victory after the penalty shootout, scoring 4 goals and losing 1, while COLBIOS, on the other hand, was able to only put the ball behind the COLAMRUD goalkeeper twice.
The Intercollegiate Sports/Vice-Chancellor’s cup saw the College of Engineering (COLENG) top the Medals Table in all competitions by carting away a total of 17 medals, going home with 5 Gold, 4 Silver, and 8 Bronze. The College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) came second with 15 medals, with 4 Gold, 6 Silver, and 5 Bronze.
COLAMRUD settled for the 3rd position with 13 medals, as they left the tournament with 3 Gold, 5 Silver, and 5 Bronze. While the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM) came 4th with 8 medals (3 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze) and the College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) sat on the 5th position with 5 medals to its credit (3 Gold, 2 Silver).
Other Colleges’ positions on the medals table are as follows: COLBIOS, 6th with 5 medals (2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze); College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM) occupied the 7th position with 5 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze) and the College of Food Science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC) came 8th with 5 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze).
At the bottom of the table was the College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) sitting 9th with 4 medals (1 Silver and 3 Bronze), while the College of Entrepreneurial Development Studies (COLENDS) and the Institute for Human Resources Development (INHURD) took the 10th and 11th positions respectively, without any medal to their credit.
Highpoint of the day was the presentation of medals and trophies to competitors from various Colleges.
