The College of Biosciences (COLBIOS) of FUNAAB has successfully ended its Second Biennial Conference themed, “Sustaining Biosciences for Human and Agricultural Development”. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako, represented by the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Babatunde Idowu, expressed his delight at the progress made by the college, stating that the conference that started as a child of necessity, and invention was now thriving, improving and had been able to attract participants from near and wide.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the college for making the University proud and putting it on the global map, adding that the whole world was looking up to scientists to provide solutions to some of the crises Nigerians are facing in the areas of health management, disease management control, and climate change. He commended the College for encouraging students’ participation in the conference, stating that it would contribute immensely to their studies. The Dean of COLBIOS, Prof. Oluseyi Akinloye described biological sciences as the bedrock of sustainable agriculture, food security, good environment, and improved health. He stated that the conference had come at the right time when Nigeria needed answers and solutions to her several challenges. He implored the guests to share ideas about science and agricultural-related researches, to broaden participants’ knowledge.
Delivering the keynote lecture on “Biosciences: A Pivotal Instrument for Human and Agricultural Development”, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Development), Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, Osun State, Prof. Janet Olaitan, pointed out the importance of agriculture to mankind, maintaining that without agriculture, human beings would be non-existent. Prof. Olaitan encouraged bio-scientists to review the existing curricula, to address emerging issues in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adding that the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory bodies should be involved in the campaign.
Prof. Olaitan, a former staff of FUNAAB, called on all specialists in the Biosciences to develop robust research teams and networks that would engender the transformation of knowledge towards providing solutions to the challenges associated with the attainment of SDGs by 2030. Present at the ceremony were a former Dean, College of Natural Sciences (COLNAS), Prof. Tope Popoola; Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Prof. Sammy Sam-Wobo; Deputy Dean, Postgraduate School, Prof. Gboyega Adebayo; and Deputy Dean of COLBIOS, Dr. Gabriel Dedeke.
