The University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was established by the Federal Government in January 1988 with the mandate of Teaching, Research and Extension Services.
The College of Natural Sciences was thus established for the first-year foundation training of all the students in the basic sciences and the B.Sc degree programme in the sciences.
The Department of Chemical Sciences, established in 1988 was later changed to the Department of Chemistry in 2001. The B.Sc degree programme has graduated seventeen (17) sets of students. Our graduates have joined the pool of trained manpower in the labour market, contributing to the development of the country. Five of our graduates are currently members of the Academic Staff and one Technical Staff in the department.
The Academic Staff strength has increased, over the years to seventeen full time, one Associate Lecturer and a Junior Research Fellow.
Late Dr. A.A. Yusuf was the first Ph.D student graduated from the Department of Chemistry in September, 2007.
Philosophy
To produce students who are very conversant in a broad sense with the theories, principles and application of chemistry and would be thoroughly resourceful, adaptive and innovative in their letter of employment whether in the field of pure chemistry research, lectureship in Tertiary Institution, in industry or develop initiative to be self employed.

- To train chemists with sustained interest and enthusiasm in chemistry and its application.
- To train chemists with a broad and balanced base of chemical knowledge and practical skills that is required for postgraduate studies and research.
- To train chemists with a range of skills applied in chemical and non chemical areas that can provide a confidence for employment.
- To train chemists that will be job creators.
