In a bid to foster better extra-curricular activities among the students, the University has introduced the first ever Community Soccer Competition. The maiden tournament tagged, “FUNAAB Community Shield Soccer Competition”, had students living around FUNAAB communities as participants. The eight communities that participated include: Male Hostels, Main Gate, Camp/Osiele and Mawuko. Others are: Isolu, Kotopo/Eleweran/Aregbe, Somorin/Odo-Eran and Alogi/Asero/Adatan Communities.

The only goal of the Match between Camp/Osiele and Mawuko was scored in the 37th minute by Mr. Johnson Olakotan, a 300-level student in the Department of Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology (WRM&A), College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM).

Speaking at the Final Match/Closing Ceremony of the Games, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, said that the benefit of the Soccer Competition was immense because it allowed the students to have a taste of how an organised competition looked like. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Director of Sports, Mr. ‘Bayo Oluwatoki, stated that part of the benefits of the competition had started materialising as new talents were discovered to represent the University in the subsequent Inter-University Games.

The Director, Institute of Human Resources Development (INHURD), Professor Francis Sowemimo, noted the importance of sports competition, being as a catalyst for fostering cordial relationships amongst the students. He added that it also helps keep the athletes fit for University tournaments and national competitions. The Director of Sports, Mr. Oluwatoki thanked the University Management for approving the Competition, adding that plans were on the way to add other games like Chess, Table Tennis, Tennis and Badminton. He observed that sport competition was a co-curricular activity which goes hand in hand with academics, stating that the competition would be sustained by planning ahead. Meanwhile, the Kotopo team came third by beating Main Gate team 4-3 through a penalty shootout. Highpoint of the event was the distribution of medals and cash awards to winners
