The Department of Chemistry, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS), has organized a befitting send-forth party for one of the Department’s Founding Academic Staff, Professor Olukayode Olusegun Odukoya, who retired after a meritorious service from the University. Speaking at the occasion, which was the first the department would organize, the Dean, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS), Professor Adio Akinwale acknowledged the unity of purpose and affection that existed in the Department. While thanking the Department for organizing a befitting send-forth for one of their own, he remarked that the vacuum left behind by the retired Don had not been filled. He advised the Department to sustain the cordial relationship towards moving to the next level.
In his remarks, the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Adebayo Lasisi described the event as epic considering the enviable role played by the retired awardee to ensure the Department stands tall in the University, adding that the history of the Department cannot be written without recognizing the input of Professors Bamiro and Odukoya. Dr. Lasisi described the duo as the founding fathers of the Chemistry Department in FUNAAB, who have carved a niche for themselves, even as their former students are now their successors in the Department. The HOD said Professor Odukoya provided administrative and academic leadership which rubbed-off positively on the Chemistry Department.
The Chairman, Send-forth Organising Committee, Professor Akinola Akinlabi lauded Prof. Odukoya for being a man of his words who has built a legacy for others to follow. Professor Akinlabi who is also the Chairman University’s Ceremonials Committee said the retired Professor has written his name in Gold as far as Chemistry Department, FUNAAB is concerned, urging up-coming academic staff to emulate the forthrightness and objectivity of Professor Odukoya.
Other speakers like Professors Adetokunbo Taiwo, Oladipo Ademuyiwa, Toyin Arowolo, Dr. (Mrs.) Temilade Akinhanmi commended Professor Odukoya for being a firm, objective, principled and exemplary character. They appreciated him for promoting high quality standard, mentoring and great academic achievements saying that his academic prowess and fantastic research will be greatly missed.
Responding, the awardee said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of encomiums and commendations showered on him. He went nostalgic by narrating the humble beginning of the Department to the present status it has attained and the challenges. He confirmed that they were able to overcome the challenges through the Grace of God and total dedication of all staff of the Department.
Professor Odukoya advised the University Management to support development and sustenance of all postgraduate programmes for a vibrant and resourceful Department that is capable of producing academic staff for the University. He counseled all to be firm, objective, transparent, accountable and endeavor to speak the truth all the time.
Highlight of the send-forth ceremony was the presentation of Award Plaque and a gift to Professor Olusegun Odukoya.
