The main objective is to train both undergraduate and postgraduate students in production, improvement, storage, processing and marketing of horticultural crops, as well as in landscape and environmental aesthetics.

Postgraduate training in the Department began in the 1993/94 session, offering three Programmes, i.e. Postgraduate Diploma in Horticulture (PDH), Master of Agriculture in Horticulture (M. Agric. in Horticulture) and Doctor of Philosophy in Horticulture (Ph.D. Horticulture). The postgraduate programme of the Department has the overall objective of providing an advanced training in the theory, practice and research in modern horticulture, which is required for improved resource utilization, food production, healthy diets and environmental friendliness.

- Production of highly skilled manpower in all specializations of horticulture i.e. Pomology (Fruit Science), Olericulture (Vegetable Science) Ornamental Horticulture (Production and utilization of ornamental plants), Post-Harvest Physiology and storage practices in horticulture produce.
- Generation of relevant technologies to enhance the development of horticulture in Nigeria.
- Optimization of improved technologies in horticulture and availability of qualitative extension back-up for dissemination to and adoption by farmers.
- Improvement of public perception of the importance and potentials of horticulture as a profession to be desired rather than despised.

Programme of Activities in the Department
The educational experience of the student in the Department of Horticulture includes a mixture of lectures, practical classes and project work. A variety of undergraduate and postgraduate course options are offered, to stimulate and enkindle the interest of undergraduates in an ever growing nutritional, environmental and commercial importance of horticulture, and to give postgraduate students a unique combination of specialist scientific knowledge and practical, adaptable skills in this unique field of agricultural and agro-allied enterprises.
