Professor Olaniyi Mathew OLAYIWOLA is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics, College of Physical Sciences, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta [FUNAAB], Ogun State, Nigeria. He was on sabbatical at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England, UK [2023–2024], a volunteer within the Kent, Medway, and Sussex Secure Data Environment for NHS Research Programme [2024-2025], and contributed in the National Conversation on Health Data organized by Insight & Strategy, NHS England [2024]. Professor Olayiwola was awarded Qualify teacher in England, UK by Department of Education in 2025. He developed Nigeria’s first predictive mathematical models for estimating ten-year reinfection probabilities of Neglected Tropical Diseases (Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health supported by the Clinton Health Access Initiative. He is a consultant to National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology and served as Survey Methodology expert in LearNigeria National Survey designed to generate empirical data on the foundational literacy and numeracy skills that Nigerian children aged 5 - 15 years possess [2016-2017]. He is an alumnus of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin; The Polytechnic, Ibadan; University of Ibadan; and University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He obtained an ND in Statistics in 1995, HND in Mathematics and Statistics in 1998, PGD in Statistics in 2002, M.Sc. in Statistics in 2005, PGD in Education in 2006, B.Sc. (Hons) in Statistics in 2010, Ph.D. in Statistics in 2011 and M.Sc in Biostatistics in 2024. He served (NYSC) at Benue Cement Company, Gboko, Benue State [1999-2000]. Prof. Olayiwola began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo [2007–2011], Lecturer II at Redeemer’s University, Mowe [2011], and joined FUNAAB in 2011. He rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2021. He has held several leadership positions including Head of Department, Department of Statistics [2019–2023], Deputy Dean, Postgraduate School [2025–date], Departmental Examination Officer, SIWES Coordinator, Level Coordinator, and Member of Senate and various University Boards and Committees at FUNAAB. He has also served as External Examiner to the postgraduate programmes of University of Ibadan, Federal University of Technology Akure, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Technology Minna, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Bells University of Technology, Ota and Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, Nigeria. He is a leading scholar in Survey Methodology, Sampling Techniques, Official Statistics, and Statistical Capacity Building. He has authored over 74 peer-reviewed journal articles. His research interests include Survey Methodology, Sampling Techniques, adaptive cluster sampling, longitudinal surveys, machine learning for public health, and Survival Analysis. He has supervised 5 Ph.D. and 32 M.Sc. students to completion, with others ongoing, and over 100 B.Sc. projects. Prof. Olayiwola is a Chartered Scientist [awarded by Science Council UK in 2012], Chartered Statistician [awarded by the Royal Statistical Society, UK in 2012], Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, UK, Member of president nominating committee for RSS, UK [2018 -2022], Member of the International Association for Official Statistics, Member of International Association of Survey Statisticians and Member of Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria. He is the Country Representative and Contact Person for the Royal Statistical Society, UK in Nigeria [2018–date], International Ambassador of the Biochemical Society, UK in Nigeria [2025 – date], the Country Representative and Contact Person for the International Association of Survey Statisticians and a key facilitator in the establishment of the Royal Statistical Society Nigeria Local Group [2018]. He has organized and led numerous national and international workshops and conferences, including RSS-IASS conferences in Nigeria, trainings for National Bureau of Statistics staff, staff of the FUNAAB University Health Centre and allied healthcare stakeholders, FUNAAB academic Planning Officers, Bureau of Statistics staff in Ogun state, and students on data analysis, survey design, R, STATA, SPSS, Python, and Healthcare Data Protection for Better Health Outcomes. He is a recipient of the RSS 2020 Mardia Prize for COVID-19 Response in Nigeria, Past Earth Network Outreach Prize [EPSRC funded, 2017], and several RSS, Maths Foresees, and SECURE travel grants. He has presented papers at RSS Annual International Conferences in the UK from 2008 to date. He is committed to capacity building and has initiated the Data Insights Extraction learning platform, Peer-Peer Assisted Learning programme, and virtual content for Statistics for nonmajor students at FUNAAB. Prof. Olayiwola was born on October 3, 1976 in Ilora, Oyo State, Nigeria and delivered FUNAAB 108th inaugural lecture titled “FROM SAMPLE TO SOLUTION: Harnessing Statistics for Evidence-Based Public Decision-Making in the Data Age,” on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building. His professional motto is advancing statistical knowledge, capacity building, and data-driven policy in Nigeria and beyond.
