Short Profile

Popoola is a professor of plant pathology with B.Sc., M.Sc. (Biochemistry) and Ph.D Applied Microbiology and Plant Pathology.  Professor Popoola had graduated 2 Ph.D., fifteen M. Agric. and three PG Diploma holders.

 

Prof. Popoola’s current research interests are marker-assisted selection of plant germplasms for desirable traits, somaclonal and genetic engineering for crop improvement, and formulation, production and application of biopesticides and nanopesticides for crop improvement.

Prof. Popoola was the Principal Investigator in a United Kingdom’s DfID-funded research project on agro-biotechnology involving FUNAAB and KNUST, Ghana. He was also the Principal Investigator in Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, ARCN/CARGS-funded project on sequencing and cloning Fusarium wilt-resistant gene for transgenic tomato production in Nigeria in collaboration with Biotechnology Advance Laboratory, Abuja and Napoli University, Italy.   He led two TETFUND’s Institution-Based Research Projects between 2015 and 2020.  Prof. Popoola’s component part of the World Bank/STEP-B funded project produced the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in the College. He also has a screenhouse within the College constructed from his funded research activities.

 

Prof. Popoola was a two-term Head of Department, Crop Protection and a former Deputy Dean of the College of Plant Science and Crop Production.  He was the Director, Biotechnology Centre, FUNAAB from 2019 to 2022.

 

Within the professional circle, Prof. Popoola was an Executive Member of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria and a one-time Editor-in-Chief of the Society’s official journal, the Nigerian Journal of Biotechnology.

 

Prof. Popoola authored 77 journal articles, two chapters in books, seven papers in edited conference proceedings and one technical report, making a total of 87 publications till date.
