The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barrister Olusegun Odubela, has observed that education was essential for national development and remained the best legacy any government can bequeath to its people. Barrister Odubela made this disclosure while delivering the Keynote Address at the Professor Ebenezer Otesile Annual Debate and Quiz Competition for Selected Secondary Schools in Ogun State, held recently at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). In the Keynote Address titled, “Qualitative and Affordable Education: Essential for National Development”, the commissioner noted that the quality of education given to the people would determine the level of development of the nation as well as the behaviour of the people.

The commissioner, who was represented by the Director, Education Inspectorate Service and Teachers Development in his ministry, Mr. Johnson Odeyemi, lauded the initiative of the Association of Veterinary Medicine Students (AVMS), College of Veterinary Medicine of FUNAAB, and the Pioneer Dean of COLVET for organising such an interesting programme, which he said was in tandem with the State Government’s vision for primary, secondary and Technical education, to completely overhaul its curriculum to empower pupils not only in the cognitive but also in the affective and psychomotor domains. The Pioneer Dean of COLVET and initiator of the Annual Debate and Quiz Competition, Professor Otesile, stated that the aim of the competition was to educate secondary school students about the Veterinary profession, familiarise them with the University system and motivate them to achieve their dreams and aspirations in life.

He charged the students when he said: “believe in yourselves, work hard, pray and God will bless your endeavours”. The schools that participated in the competition were Sacred Heart College, Ibara, which emerged 1st position; Adeline Ogunlade Memorial School, Obantoko, 2nd Position while Focus International School, Sagamu, won the 3rd position.
