Dear Content Contributor,

I believe we are all having exciting moments in this examination period after a rigorous teaching and learning session. However, the next assignment is the marking of examination scripts. Meanwhile, there are other activities that need to be considered after marking which many teachers in Higher Education (HE) always overlook during the assessment of our learners. Let us consider the following steps:

Step 1. Marking and recording of examination scripts

Step 2. Examine the flow of questions answered by the students on the recording sheet

Step 3. Investigate why almost all the students answered particular question(s) and refused to answer some?

Step 4. What are the envisaged factor(s) responsible for the poor/excellent performance of students in such examination?

Step 5. Does the concept behind the subject not well understood by our learners? Do we need to change our approach/ teaching methodology next time?

Step  6: What is the correlation of students’ performance in the subject being analyzed  between the last session and this year results? Having in mind that the results sheet contains the data on students’ performance.

Step 7. And many more questions we may need to ask ourselves.

However, if indeed, excellent students’ performance is our concern and we want to measure and develop the quality of our teaching over the years, then adherence to exercises listed above should be our priority at the end of each semester and session.

There are lot of books and write-ups on test and measurement in Higher Education Institution that we can use as a guide. Remember, the quality of teaching in Higher Education is a function of the lecturer’s readiness. I wish we all reflect on this small piece.

Thank you.
