The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, recently approved the appointment of a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adewale Solarin as the substantive Director-General of National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Abuja.
A Professor of Mathematics with specialty in Algebra, Professor Solarin obtained all his academic degrees from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, FUNAAB on September 1, 1997 and served as the Head of Department, from September 1997 to February 2000.
Professor Solarin was a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 2004 to 2006 and member of the University’s Governing Council from 2000 to 2006.
The Director-General, who has a background in Statistics, has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science within and outside the country. He has also published over 30 papers in Statistics and Mathematics in internationally-reputable journals and written more than 20 papers on Total Quality Management (TQM) and related topics for journals, seminars, workshops and conferences.
The scholar was involved in the development and implementation of not less than 10 academic curricula, two of which were in FUNAAB.
He delivered the University’s 9th Inaugural Lecture titled “Total Quality: A Mathematical Panacea For National Productivity Improvement” and was one of the prime movers for the inauguration of the Quality Control Society of Nigeria (QCSON) in 1990.
Until his appointment, Professor Solarin was the Acting Director-General of the Centre. Little wonder all roads led to Abeokuta last weekend, for a Thanksgiving Service in his honour put together by his family. The occasion was graced by dignitaries within and outside the University community.
