In a bid to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world practice, final-year students of the College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), recently embarked on an educational field trip to Totmak Farmers Centre, Arigbajo-Ifo, Ogun State.

The excursion, which took place on March 13, 2026, provided the 600-Level students with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in veterinary entrepreneurship and industry practice. Research has consistently shown that experiential learning enhances knowledge retention and deepens students’ understanding of their fields of study. Beyond academic learning, such excursions also foster teamwork, communication, and creative thinking among students.

Totmak Farmers Centre, a leading agricultural service provider in Nigeria, offers agricultural consultancy services and operates a veterinary pharmacy, with branches located in Ota, Itori, and Ifo in Ogun State. The visit exposed the students to practical aspects of veterinary pharmaceuticals, quality control processes, and professional consultancy services within the agricultural sector.

During the visit, the 44 students were divided into four batches of 11 participants each and taken on guided tours of the facility. They were introduced to key operational sections of the company, including the veterinary pharmacy, diagnostic room, post-mortem room, feed store, vaccine chamber, energy control room, and media room, among others. The students were also educated on the importance of strict hygiene practices, effective inventory management, controlled access systems, and the use of modern technologies to enhance drug marketing and ensure compliance with industry regulations.

The field trip was coordinated by the Head of the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Prof. Olubukola Adenubi, alongside other lecturers, including Dr. Joshua Oyewusi, Dr. Samuel Attama, Dr. Olufunke Oliyide, and Dr. Damilare P. Dosunmu, as well as the Laboratory Technologist, Mr. Charles Leigh.

As the students returned to campus, they carried with them not only practical knowledge of veterinary industry operations but also renewed inspiration to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of veterinary medicine, entrepreneurship, and animal health in Nigeria.
