In an effort to provide practical self-employment opportunities alongside academic knowledge to its students, the Department of Microbiology, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), today, May 6, 2025, hosted its annual Entrepreneurial Skills Exhibition for Final-Year students.
Coordinated by Prof. Oluwatoyin Afolabi, Director of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), the Exhibition was a key component of the Entrepreneurial Skills in Microbiology course, aimed at preparing students for sustainable business ventures in light of limited white-collar job opportunities.
During the Exhibition, students showcased microbiology-based products such as palm wine, ogiri, cheese, pap, locust beans, and yogurt, highlighting the microbial processes involved and their implications for food preservation and health.
Describing the need for the Exhibition, Prof. Afolabi, a Food/Quality control expert emphasised the global significance of Microbiology in business and healthcare, particularly the use of probiotics for gut health and immunity.
Highpoint was the display of the products, including the submission of trade names by the students for registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Academic staff members present during the Exhibition were Prof. Oluwafemi Flora, Dr. Seun Adebajo, Dr. Abidemi Ojo, and Dr. Cecilia Ojesola and they commended the Department’s progressive approach and the students’ creativity and professionalism.
