As the world commemorates the 2026 World Bee Day, today, May 20, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has reiterated the importance of honey bees to food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem sustainability, while calling on members of the University Community to peacefully coexist with the valuable pollinators.

Honey bees, according to experts, are not naturally aggressive towards humans but are largely defensive in nature, especially when they perceive threats to their colonies. What is often described as conflict between bees and humans is usually a misunderstanding arising from shared environmental spaces.

Speaking on the significance of the global celebration, experts noted that World Bee Day is observed annually to raise awareness on the critical role bees and other pollinators play in ensuring food production, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining ecosystem health across the world.
