The long-awaited harvest of the 2-hectare tomato farm, cultivated in June 2024, by the industrious students of the Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS) on Farm Practical Year (FPY), at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), officially began today, August 26, 2024.
The initiative was strategically launched to demonstrate the University’s commitment to practical agricultural education and address the rising cost of tomatoes in the local market.
The tomatoes, a high-yield Platinum variety known for their fleshy texture, weight, and extended shelf life, are being sold at a competitive price of ₦750 per kilogram.
Sales are scheduled for three times a week – Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
The project is expected to generate significant revenue for the University, with students actively involved in the entire sales process, providing them with valuable hands-on experience in agricultural business operations.
Prospective buyers are encouraged to make their purchases on the designated harvest days or pre-order by contacting Mr. Gbenga Alayode on 08164310866 or Mr. Taiwo Semighan on 08063002343.
The success of the tomato farm showcases the agricultural prowess of COBFAS students and serves as a beacon for how academic institutions can contribute to solving food security challenges through innovative farming practices.
