As part of the staff development initiative of the University Management, the Department of Works and Services recently facilitated a two 2-day workshop tagged, “Intensive Re-Orientation and Refresher Course for University’s Motor Drivers/Mechanics and Technical Assistants (Automobile)”.
Presenting a Paper titled, “Traffic Rules and Regulation: Right of Way”, Commander Abdulrahman Ajala of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), said accidents occur when road users violate traffic rules. He defined a driver as someone who has the knowledge of operating a motor vehicle; has adequate knowledge of the in-built functions; recognises, understands and observes all road traffic signs and signals on the road (i.e Highway Code). He appealed to the participants to always endeavour to carry out daily routine checks on their vehicles before embarking on any journey. Commander Abdulrahaman Ajala added that the essence of traffic rules and regulations was to resolve traffic conflict by bringing about orderliness, because when traffic rules and regulations are observed, there will be a reduction in traffic congestion.
The Managing Consultant of Lizzy Consult, Venerable Olurotimi Akinyele, educated the drivers on the “History of Automobile: Introduction to Motoring and Functional Parts of the Vehicle”, as he itemised the roles and responsibilities of a driver to include: ability to do routine vehicle checks and basic maintenance; practising road safety consciousness; being able to report road traffic crash to appropriate bodies; being neatly dressed, among others. Commander Nodiru Taiwo, who is the Head, Public Relations Unit, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, noted that, researches conducted on road traffic crashes had shown that, there were three major causes of road traffic crashes, namely: Human factor (overconfidence, speeding, lack of concentration, tiredness, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous overtaking); mechanical and environmental factors. He appealed to the drivers to always adhere strictly to accident prevention measures and liaise with relevant bodies such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN). 
The Managing Director of Tunnel Auto Care Company, Mr. Babatunde Osunkoya, in histitled, “Ideal Servicing and “Repair Methods and Skills in Automobile Workshop on Vehicles”, implored drivers to always know the state of motor vehicles before driving them by checking the oil level and water availability in the radiator, among others. During the programme, skills in the areas of writing good quotations and safety precautions were also imparted on participants.
The Managing Consultant of Lizzy Oyinlola Consult, Venerable Olurotimi Akinyele, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, for making it possible to train the staff, which will enhance their productivity and performance. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, was represented at the occasion by Engineer Kehinde Ajiboye, of the Department of Works and Services, who expressed his gratitude to the participants for their dedication to duties, noting that the University had always recognised their contributions in moving the University forward.
