The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, recently received the Ogun State Impact Assessment Team for Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) during a courtesy visit to the University.
The delegation, led by Consultant Lead Parasitologist and Director, FUNAAB Zoo Park, Prof. Sammy Sam-Wobo, visited the Vice-Chancellor to brief him on the ongoing state-wide study aimed at assessing the current prevalence of Schistosomiasis and STH infections among school and community pupils. The study involved the analysis of faecal and urine samples collected from pupils across 40 schools in the 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State. Findings from the study would inform evidence-based policy decisions and programmatic interventions.
The team also used the opportunity to express their gratitude to the University Management for supporting the exercise by granting access to the Biology Laboratory, releasing 16 microscopes, and providing laboratory stools to aid the fieldwork.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the team for their dedication to public health and research, reiterating FUNAAB’s commitment to supporting impactful collaborations with national and international institutions. He particularly applauded Prof. Sam-Wobo for his exemplary research work and leadership, noting his contributions both as a scholar and as Director of the FUNAAB Zoo Park.
Other members of the delegation included Mrs. Imaobong Umah, Programme Manager for Schistosomiasis/STH at the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Division of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; Mrs. Maryam Kafol-Emiola, Deputy Director, NTDs, Ogun State Ministry of Health; Mrs. Maryann Edeh, South-West Manager, Evidence Action, the implementing partner; and Dr. Wunmi Abimbola-Okuneye, Director, DITTECS, FUNAAB, among others.
