The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has strengthened its commitment to digital skills development through a partnership with Huawei Technologies Nigeria to equip students and staff with globally relevant Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.
The initiative was highlighted at the 2026–2027 Huawei ICT Competition Roadshow held on October 21, 2026, at the Professor Olusola Oyewole Lecture Theatre, where participants explored opportunities offered by the Huawei ICT Academy and its international competition.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Director, Directorate of Academic and Information Systems (DACIS), Prof. Olusegun Folorunso, described the partnership as a strategic effort to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands.
He noted that emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, big data, cybersecurity and 5G networks, were transforming the global economy, making digital competence essential for career advancement and employability.
Prof. Folorunso urged students to leverage the Huawei ICT Academy to acquire practical skills and internationally recognised certifications, including Huawei Certified ICT Associate, Professional and Expert qualifications. He also encouraged staff, particularly those in computing and engineering, to pursue professional development and explore opportunities to become certified instructors.
He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for supporting the partnership, while commending Huawei Technologies Nigeria for providing training resources and facilitators to strengthen ICT capacity development at FUNAAB.
In his remarks, Huawei Technologies Nigeria’s Talent Manager, Knimi Bakna Musa, emphasised the company’s commitment to developing ICT talent, promoting technology transfer and building capacity through collaborations with universities, polytechnics and other educational institutions across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the roadshow also introduced participants to the 2026–2027 Huawei ICT Competition, which offers students opportunities to showcase their technological abilities and compete for cash and non-cash prizes, industry training, professional certifications, career opportunities and an advertised all-expenses-paid trip to China.
Staff participants were drawn from DACIS, the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology Services (DICTS) and the College of Computing Sciences (COLCOMPS), while students represented COLCOMPS, the College of Engineering (COLENG) and other Colleges of the University.
In attendance were the Ag. Director of DICTS, Mr Temitope Soretire, alongside other staff members of DICTS and many students.
