The 2017/2018 Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) Screening Exercise of the University, has been fixed for Wednesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 5, 2017, for candidates, who made the University their first choice in the 2017 UTME, as conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Speaking on the level of the University’s preparedness for the exercise, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Chairperson, Admissions Committee of the University, Professor Oluyemisi Eromosele, has assured of the readiness of the University, to conduct the examination, from 7.30am to 6pm, daily. Professor Eromosele said that a total of 8,210 candidates had indicated their intention to participate in the exercise, which would take place in both the 500 and 200-seater computer laboratories with a total of about 4,000 candidates participating, on daily basis, for the two days. She added that this years’ edition would also be Computer-based Test while the results were expected to be out, same day, after the examination had been conducted.
According to her, “This year, the new arrangement put in place by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), known as the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), would be used, where all the Post-UTME scores of candidates would be captured and put on the JAMB portal, so that it would be processed alongside their UTME results”. She informed that composite computation would be used, as it had been done in FUNAAB, which is 50 per cent of the candidate’s UTME score, 30 per cent of Post-UTME score and 20 per cent of a candidate’s Ordinary Level results.
“By the time the Admissions Committee (ADMICO) is done, candidates who may have been admitted into other courses apart from the one initially applied for, but would have the opportunity to say YES or NO, through a Short Message Services (SMS), to be sent to their phone numbers, which is an opportunity they never had in time past”, adding that, “If a candidate replied with a YES, JAMB would go ahead and issue admission letter to such candidates, but if the candidate says NO, JAMB would make the name of such candidate available to other universities”.
On JAMB, Professor Eromosele said the matriculation body had done well this year by giving every tertiary institution its autonomy to determine its cut-off marks, unlike the way it was done before when JAMB determines the cut-off mark for the institutions and at the end of the admission processes, the universities would still go back to JAMB for regularisation. As part of preparations for this year’s examination, she said that FUNAAB would make available buses to convey candidates from the Camp area to the two holding centres, set aside for candidates. The centres, according to her are: the Multi-purpose (MP01) Lecture Hall and the Mahmood Yakubu Lecture Hall and is meant to keep all the candidates in one place till when they would be taken in batches to the next available examination hall. In addition, canopies would be erected outside for adequate preparation for people, while two canopies would be provided for parents and guardians, outside the school’s gate while counsellors would equally be on ground, to counsel the candidates. Professor Eromosele said that the University had an admission quota of about 3,500, plus direct entries with the ratio of 30 per cent to Sciences, and 70 per cent for Agricultural-based courses.
She regretted the drop in the number of students sitting for the Post-UTME, which was borne out of the suspension of admission into management courses in specialised universities like FUNAAB. However, she expressed hope that the ministries of agriculture and education would resolve the issue of specialised universities, especially if the affected universities make a strong case, in the near future, because, agricultural business required learning something about management sciences, which makes it a more robust curriculum, adding that adequate security measures had been put in place, through the Environmental Unit of FUNAAB, among others.
