FUNAAB Launches Peer-Assisted Learning to Boost Academic Excellence

Published On:

November 6, 2024

The Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) initiative, inaugurated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, marks a forward-thinking step in enhancing student learning and engagement through a robust, peer-based support system.

Designed to foster collaborative learning, PAL encourages students to deepen their understanding by teaching and learning from their peers, bridging gaps in academic support while building vital teaching, leadership, and communication skills.

The inauguration featured a distinguished committee, underscoring the strong backing and commitment to educational excellence. Notable members include Prof. Jacob Olaoye, Director, Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC); Prof. Olaniyi Olayiwola from the Statistics Department, and Prof. Pius Dada, Chairman, Time-Table and Examination Committee (TIMTEC). Their collective expertise signifies the initiative’s interdisciplinary approach, aimed at guiding students across a diverse range of subjects.

During the interview process for PAL tutors, Prof. Akinyemi and the Committee members like Prof. Oluseyi Ojekunle, Deputy Dean, Student Affairs; Mr. Temitope Soretire, Ag. Director, Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre (ICTREC); Dr. Oluwaseun Wale-Orojo of the Statistics Department, and Dr. Oludare Adekoyeni of the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research (IFSERAR), equally representing the Alumni Association jointly emphasised the qualities necessary for effective peer tutoring.

The rigorous selection process ensures that tutors are not only academically proficient but also possess the interpersonal skills vital for cultivating a supportive learning environment.

The presence of senior Academic Staff and Administrators highlighted the University’s dedication to empowering students, with each member offering unique insights from their field. The PAL initiative was poised to nurture a collaborative academic culture, paving the way for continuous student growth and engagement.
