The Management of the University has commiserated with the family of Professor Inyang Akpan, a Professor of Industrial Microbiology, in the Department of Microbiology, College of Natural Sciences, who died last Thursday. A Letter of Condolence, signed by the Acting Registrar, Mrs. Christiana Kuforiji, conveyed the University’s deepest sorrow over his death and prayed that God grants the family, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Also, the Dean of COLNAS, Professor Tope Popoola, has described Professor Akpan as a pioneer staff of the University, who made tremendous contributions to the development of the Microbiology Department and the University as a whole, describing his demise at this time as an “unquantifiable loss to the Nigerian academic community”. Professor Popoola urged the family to take solace in the fact that he lived a very productive life and made invaluable contributions to mankind. Late Professor Akpan joined FUNAAB in 1984 as a Graduate Assistant and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Industrial Microbiology in 2007. He was Head of Microbiology Department, between 2005 and 2009. Professor Akpan, 55, was until his death, President of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology.
