In a proactive effort to enhance the safety and security of lives and property on campus, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in collaboration with Jobi Consulting Firm, organised a 3-Day Fire Safety Training for key staff members.
The Training targeted personnel from the Environmental Unit, selected staff from the Directorate of Works and Services, and members of the University’s Security Committee.
Held at the Postgraduate School Auditorium, the Training commenced on July 26, 2024.
In his Opening Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Kola Adebayo, commended the participants for their attendance.
He emphasised the dual nature of fire, noting that while it could be beneficial, it also posed significant risks.
Prof. Kehinde stated that despite FUNAAB’s over thirty-year history, the University has only experienced minor fire incidents, underscoring the importance of preventive measures.
Prof. Adebayo mentioned the University’s recent acquisition of a Fire Truck, stressing the need for trained personnel to operate the equipment effectively.
He pointed out the geographic challenges, noting that the nearest fire station was over 40 kilometres away, making it crucial for the University to be self-sufficient in fire safety.
The Vice-Chancellor, however, noted that the Training was aimed at equipping participants with the skills to act as trainers, extending their knowledge to the broader University community of approximately 3,000 staff and over 22,000 students.
Prof. Kehinde stressed that fire could occur unexpectedly, and the Training would be beneficial both professionally and personally for the participants.
Elaborating on the Training’s structure, the Training Consultant from JOBI Consulting, Mr. Seun Agbejobi, said that the Training included theoretical and practical components conducted in partnership with the Federal Fire Service.
He outlined the schedule, including a squad drill, a fire drill with the newly acquired Fire Truck, and an examination on the final day to assess participants’ competence.
Mr. Agbejobi expressed gratitude to the University Management for their support and assured them that the Training would be thorough and beneficial.
Attendees were the Assistant Chief Environmental Officer (ACEO), Mr. Peter Bolarinwa, Officers from the Federal Fire Service, Deputy Superintendent of Fire (DSF) Abdullahi Garuba, DSF Agbede Olatunde, Fire Inspector Adesanya Korede, as well as Commandant Michael Agba from Sheriff Deputies Limited, including key officers from the Environmental Unit.
