The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has recorded another successful harvest of Habanero and Bell pepper, thanks to a collaborative effort between Musarchy Farms and the FUNAAB Integrated Ventures (FIV).

Speaking with FUNAAB Bulletin during the harvest today, January 20, 2025, Mr. Taiwo Ojediran, Chief Executive Officer of Musarchy Farms, highlighted the University’s contributions to addressing food insecurity in the country.

Mr. Ojediran explained that the Habanero pepper was a hybrid version of the Scotch Bonnet, also known as “Rodo” in Yoruba. He emphasised that the Habanero offers several advantages, including its aroma, flavour, and affordability.

“With only 3-4 pieces, a family can prepare a meal, making it an attractive option for consumers”, he added.

Further enquiries about the pepper informed that the Habanero pepper was sold at ₦4,000 per kilogramme, significantly cheaper than market prices. Interested staff can purchase the pepper directly from FIV.

In addition to the Habanero pepper, Bell pepper was also harvested. It’s a hybrid version of the Yoruba “Tatase” and was sold at ₦4,500 per kilogramme. They have a longer shelf life, lasting up to three weeks.

Mr. Ojediran concluded by encouraging FUNAAB students to take advantage of the partnership between Musarchy Farms and the University, saying that the collaboration would provide students with training opportunities in crop management, greenhouse fabrication, and installation, ultimately preparing them for entrepreneurial ventures in agriculture.
