The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is set to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Zero Waste with a One-Day Workshop on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the Postgraduate School Auditorium, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The workshop was organised to promote awareness on waste pollution and to encourage sustainable consumption and production practices.
Speaking on the upcoming event, the Team Lead, Prof. Babatunde Bada, stated that the Zero Waste initiative aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11 and 12, which focused on sustainable cities and communities, as well as responsible consumption and production, respectively.
Prof. Bada revealed that this year’s observance would focus on the theme, “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles.” According to him, the fashion and textile industry remained a critical sector in advancing the zero-waste agenda, from strengthening global waste management systems to minimising waste generation and fostering sustainable practices.
The workshop is being organised under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) programme, funded by the European Union. It is also a component of the COPAFEU Project – Co-producing Knowledge on Sustainable Growth through Service-Learning Pedagogy between African and European Higher Education Institutions.
Meanwhile, the International Day of Zero Waste, observed annually on March 30, (https://unhabitat.org/international-day-of-zero-waste), highlights both the importance of bolstering waste management globally and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns.
