The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in collaboration with the Wellness Africa Foundation (WAF), has concluded a 5-Day “See to Be Safe Vision” Screening Programme aimed at improving eye health, promoting early detection of vision problems and enhancing the overall well-being of members of the University Community.
The 5-Day initiative, which ran from August 31 to September 4, 2026, provided staff with access to professional eye screening and comprehensive eye examinations, eye-health education, affordable prescription eyeglasses and referrals for participants requiring specialised medical attention.
The programme was implemented by WAF, the representative and implementing partner of the Right to Health & Vision Initiative in Ogun State, as part of efforts to promote preventive eye care and improve access to essential vision services within the University Community.
Under the collaboration, licensed eye-care professionals and qualified Optometrists conducted professional screenings and comprehensive eye examinations, while licensed Opticians handled the dispensing and fitting of prescription spectacles for beneficiaries.
According to the Ag. Director, Directorate of Health Services (DHS), FUNAAB, Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, participants requiring vision correction accessed prescription eyeglasses at a highly subsidised cost of ₦2,000.
Dr. Anjorin added that participants requiring specialised treatment or surgical care were referred by the Directorate to appropriate eye-care facilities through the National Health Insurance Desk Office. He explained that the exercise was entirely non-invasive, involving no medication administration or surgical procedures, but focused on vision assessment, corrective eyewear and eye-health education.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, who endorsed the initiative, directed the Directorate of Health Services to facilitate its implementation, reaffirming the University Management’s commitment to promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of staff and other members of the University Community.
Speaking on the initiative, one of the beneficiaries, Mr. Olurotimi Fasunwon, Deputy Director II, Directorate of Information and Communication Technology Services (DICTS), and former Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUNAAB Branch, described the partnership as a welcome development. He said he had benefited from the exercise and was now aware of his eye-health status.
Mr. Fasunwon, who received a pair of prescription glasses, said the intervention would improve his vision. He commended the University Management for prioritising staff welfare and urged it to sustain and improve similar initiatives.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Monsurat Amolegbe of the Environmental Unit, also commended the University Management for the peaceful and well-organised conduct of the exercise. She appreciated the opportunity to receive a new pair of prescription glasses, noting that accessing similar services elsewhere could be expensive.
