The FUNAAB Zoo Park has recorded a significant boost in its conservation efforts with the acquisition of a young pair of ostriches and an expansion of its aviary collection, transforming a recent setback into a renewed opportunity for growth.

In a bid to revitalise its ostrich breeding programme, the University had initially facilitated the procurement of a female ostrich from the Old Oyo National Park to complement the Park’s aging male. Unfortunately, the bird sustained a fatal dislocation during transportation and, despite prompt veterinary attention at the University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), the bird did not survive.

Undeterred, the Zoo Park management, with the generous support of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, promptly acquired a new pair of healthy young ostriches, a move that breathes new life into the breeding initiative and strengthens the Park’s role in conservation, education, and research.

Further enriching its wildlife collection, the Park has also added a pair of colourful lovebirds and a pair of long-tailed Indian parakeets to its aviary, enhancing both biodiversity and the overall visitor experience.

The Zoo Park Management expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the University Management, and the entire University Community, including the FUNAAB Alumni Association led by its Global President, Mr. Bolaji Gbadamosi, for their steadfast support in advancing the Park’s mission.
