The goat breeding initiative introduced at the FUNAAB Zoo Park in 2024 is steadily gaining traction, aligning with the University’s commitment to sustainability and cost-effective animal management. Spearheaded by the Director of the Zoo Park, Prof. Sammy Sam-Wobo, the project has recorded notable success, with several female goats recently giving birth.
Launched to reduce the cost of feeding carnivorous animals such as jackals and crocodiles, the initiative provided an in-house source of meat, ensuring a more reliable and controlled feeding programme while limiting external procurement.
Beyond its operational benefits, the initiative also fosters community engagement. FUNAAB staff interested in goat rearing have been encouraged to participate at no financial cost, except for contributing dried cassava peels, nutritional supplements, and basic veterinary support.
The goat breeding project is one of several forward-looking interventions being implemented under the current Zoo Management. With sustained support, it is poised to become a model for integrating small-scale livestock production into zoological settings.
