FUNAAB’s Computer Science Graduates Inducted as CPN Professionals

The Department of Computer Science, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), today, July 23, 2025, hosted the 10th Induction Ceremony for its B.Sc. Computer Science graduating class, marking their formal admission into the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN).

Held at the Postgraduate Auditorium, the event was pivotal as the 2024/2025 graduating class transitioned from academic training to professional status as certified computing professionals.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Olawale Dairo, congratulated the inductees, describing the ceremony as more than a rite of passage. He noted that it marked their initiation into a profession that was key to national transformation, economic development, and global competitiveness.

Referencing the theme, “Unlocking Potentials in the Digital Evolution,” the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the seismic shifts occurring across sectors due to digital transformation, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he noted was revolutionising fields such as healthcare, fraud detection, agriculture, and education. He urged the inductees to embrace ethical and inclusive innovation and to apply their skills to tackle pressing challenges like food security, climate resilience, digital inclusion, and economic sustainability.

According to him, “The power of computing lies not just in writing code but in solving real-world problems.”

Earlier in her Opening Remarks, the Head of Department, Computer Science, Prof. Oluwasefunmi Arogundade, described the induction as a significant milestone, stating that the graduates had undergone rigorous academic and professional training. She emphasised that the digital era calls for a fusion of theory and practice driven by ethical, inclusive, and sustainable innovation.

Prof. Arogundade also revealed that the event was her last CPN induction as HoD, as she prepares to assume her new role as the Pioneer Dean of the newly established College of Computing (COLCOM).

Delivering the keynote address, renowned academic and tech expert, Prof. Seyi Osunade, spoke extensively on opportunities in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. He pointed to major developments in fintech, e-commerce, health tech, EdTech, and the creative industry as windows of opportunity for young professionals.

He charged the graduates to adopt a growth mindset and develop competencies in adaptability, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and ethical leadership. He also encouraged them to see CPN membership as a gateway to credibility, standardisation, and continuous learning.

“Your journey begins now,” Prof. Osunade concluded. “Nigeria needs your brilliance and dedication to build a digital future.”

The highpoint of the event was the formal presentation of induction certificates to the new professionals and scholarship awards to the two Best Graduating students, who were Daniel Adejare and Oluwafemi Sobowale. They were awarded CPN scholarships for the CPE 3 Examination.

Other distinguished attendees included the representative of the CPN Registrar/Secretary to Council, Chief Toyin Komolafe; Dean of the College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS), Prof. Adio Akinwale, and other notable guests from academia and industry.
