FUNIS Celebrates 20 Years of Excellence with Royal Blessings

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta International School (FUNIS) on Saturday, October 19, 2024, commemorated its 20th Anniversary with a celebration marked by royal blessings from His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adedapo Tejuoso, CON, Karunwi III Oranmiyan, the Osile Oke-Ona Egba, and his wife, Olori Yetunde Tejuoso. As the Royal Father and Mother of the Day, they offered prayers for the continued progress and prosperity of the school, its staff, and students.

Reminiscing on FUNIS’ early days, Oba Tejuoso and Olori Yetunde said that their children were the first students registered at the school’s inception, a decision driven by their passion for the growth of the school. They expressed gratitude for FUNIS’ remarkable growth over the years, citing its outstanding achievements and continuous record-breaking performance.

In his Welcome Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, congratulated all stakeholders, including staff, students, and parents on the momentous occasion. He assured attendees that FUNAAB Management would build on the school’s successes and strengthen its foundations, ensuring that FUNIS continues to uphold its reputation for excellence. Prof. Kehinde also extended his appreciation to past and present principals and staff for their dedication and contributions.

The Board Chairman and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, described the day as a significant milestone in the history of FUNIS. He praised the school’s founding fathers and celebrated its 20 years of remarkable achievements, emphasising the grace and progress that have accompanied the journey.

The visibly elated Principal of FUNIS, Mr. Olusola Ilori, reflected on the school’s establishment two decades ago, noting its mission to provide quality education and nurture young minds. He highlighted FUNIS’ consistent academic excellence and its role in producing successful individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Mr. Ilori also expressed gratitude to the University’s leadership, particularly the current and former Vice-Chancellors, for their unwavering support in maintaining and improving the school’s standards and infrastructure.

Mr. Onaopepo Adu, the Chairman of the occasion and Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Sports Marketing and Administration, encouraged students to embrace their experiences at FUNIS, urging them to participate fully in school activities and step outside their comfort zones to achieve their goals.

As a member of FUNIS’ 2004 pioneer set, he attributed much of his success to the values instilled in him during his time at the school, thanking his former teachers for their guidance.

In her Keynote Speech, titled “Paradigm Shift in Secondary School Education in Nigeria: Pivotal in Moulding Future Leaders,” Dr. Emily Adeniji, Deputy Director of Teaching Practice at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, Abeokuta, stressed the critical role secondary education plays in shaping future leaders. She noted that schools must foster responsibility, civic engagement, and leadership skills to prepare students for the challenges of governance and societal development.

Notable guests at the event included former FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun; former University Librarian, Mr. Abayomi Agboola; former Board Chairman, Prof. Michael Aduradola; former Director, Directorate of Physical Planning, Arch. Babatunde Anasanwo, and former FUNIS Principal, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Juba, among others.

The anniversary celebrations concluded with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Grace today, Sunday, October 20, 2024. During the Service, the University Chaplain, Prof. Christian Ikeobi, encouraged the FUNIS community to reflect on its humble beginnings and to continue striving for greater achievements.

Highpoints were the presentation of awards to deserving recipients, cultural display, and the cutting of the 20th Anniversary cake.

The event also featured a Jumat Service on Friday, October 18, 2024.
