The maiden Health Week Symposium at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) entered its third day with a proactive push towards preventive healthcare, and the commencement of free medical investigations for staff and students.

From impactful lectures to insightful presentations and now hands-on screenings, the week-long programme has steadily built momentum, drawing participation from across the University Community.

In this brief interview, Olasunkanmi Olajide and Tofunmi Adebayo of the FUNAAB Bulletin spoke with the Ag. Director, University Health Services, Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, and the Head, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Oludayo Oduwole, on the progress, impact, and expectations of the maiden Health Week Symposium.

Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin – Ag. Director, University Health Services

“From my own personal assessment, I will say the maiden Health Week Symposium has been a success. We have moved from the lecture sessions into the practical phase of medical examinations, and today being the first day of the free medical check-ups, we have attended to about 252 people, including staff, some students, and other members of the University Community. We expect even more tomorrow, which will be the last day.

We sincerely appreciate the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, and the University Management for providing the necessary funds to make this possible. I also commend our medical staff, whose primary duty is to see patients, but who have worked tirelessly to carry out these screenings with great commitment.

Public awareness has been key, and we thank the Public Relations Directorate for helping us reach out to the community. Like we often say, your health is your responsibility. Management has given us this free opportunity to know our health status, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it. After the tests, our doctors provide advice, whether you’re doing well or need to make changes. This is a rare chance, somebody is paying for it, so please make use of it.

Hopefully, next year’s edition will be even bigger, with more participation from Academic staff and students when school is fully in session.”

“It couldn’t have started in a better way. The University Management has been magnanimous enough to recognise the importance of periodic health checks for its staff, and the response so far has been quite encouraging.

We believe that in subsequent years, the programme will become more robust. Once again, we thank everyone who has contributed, the Vice-Chancellor, Management, and the University Community, for making this a success. We can only look forward to even better outcomes in the years ahead.”
