FUNAAB Shines Again as Alumnus, Dr. Ifeanyi Okpala, Champions Infrastructure Innovation at ASCE Houston

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has continued to demonstrate the global impact of its graduates as Dr. Ifeanyi Okpala, an alumnus of the University’s Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering (COLENG), delivered the keynote speech at the June 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Houston Branch meeting.
Dr. Okpala, who later completed his PhD in Civil Engineering at The University of Alabama, United States, shared forward‑looking insights on emerging approaches to infrastructure development and engineering innovation.
Speaking on the theme “It Starts with Civil: Redefining Infrastructure for a Changing World,” he emphasised the need for engineers to rethink traditional methods as global infrastructure demands evolve rapidly.
Drawing from over a decade of experience in project engineering, technical leadership, and program management across diverse global environments, Dr. Okpala discussed how the convergence of Civil Engineering, project execution, and materials science is expanding the engineering toolkit available to today’s professionals. He highlighted that modern infrastructure challenges require solutions that deliver improved performance, durability, and long-term value.
A key example featured in his presentation was the Proxxima™ Polyolefin Thermoset Resin Systems, which enable lighter, stronger, faster-curing, and more corrosion-resistant infrastructure solutions, illustrating how advanced materials can reshape project delivery and long-term infrastructure performance.
Dr. Okpala stressed that innovation in infrastructure must go beyond technology alone. He emphasised the importance of translating scientific and engineering advancements into practical outcomes that improve project execution, safety, resilience, and sustainability.
The ASCE Houston engagement was well attended by Civil Engineers, contractors, researchers, Academics, and future industry leaders, creating a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange and professional dialogue. According to Dr. Okpala, advancing innovation requires collaboration, education, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking.
His participation as the keynote speaker highlights the growing global visibility of FUNAAB graduates and the University’s role in producing professionals who apply their expertise to address contemporary engineering challenges.
Dr. Okpala’s academic and professional journey (from FUNAAB to earning a PhD at the University of Alabama and contributing to global engineering initiatives) reflects the enduring strength of FUNAAB’s engineering education in preparing graduates for advanced study, leadership, and innovation on the world stage.
The ASCE Houston Branch meeting has ultimately reinforced the need for Engineers to bridge disciplines, embrace innovation, and design infrastructure with long-term performance, resilience, and sustainability in mind.
