Former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has been described as a man of valour, who will not be easily forgotten for his contributions to national development. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole, stated this at the flag-off of the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Free Health Foundation (COOFEHEF), held at the prestigious Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Oke-Imosan, Abeokuta, last Saturday. Represented by the Director, Health Services, Dr. Olusola Talabi, the Vice-Chancellor said the occasion symbolised the beginning of service to humanity, which he said is continous. The Programmes Co-ordinator, COOFEHEF, Dr. Olalekan Makinde, disclosed that the Foundation was set up to offer free medical services to people living in the rural areas, especially, those who cannot afford access to good health-care services. He said the Foundation will target the whole of Ogun State within the next one year and the whole of Nigeria, in five years. The President, Nigeria Heart Foundation (NHF), Dr. Kingsley Akinroye, stated that non-communicable diseases are silent killers, such as heart-related diseases. He identified some of the objectives of NHF to include the promotion of research, advocacy and public enlightenment on the prevention of heart diseases. Dr. Akinroye declared that nutrition is important, adding that NHF is partnering with Osun State to provide nutritious food to school children. According to him, “these children grow up into productive healthy adults that are useful to themselves and the nation in general”. He charged the populace to be conscious of the major risk factors that increase the chances of heart-diseases namely; High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, Tobacco intake, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes. Speaking at the occasion, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Gbadebo emphasised the importance of the free medical service in touching as many lives as possible. Oba Gbadebo advised that people should try as much as possible to assist each other, most especially the less privileged. Similarly, the Proprietor of the Crescent University, Prince Bola Ajibola reminisced about his early days in school with Chief Obasanjo when he said, “We both planned to serve God and humanity”. “He built a Church, I built a Mosque; he built a school, I built a school; he established a University, I did same”, he noted. According to him, “we have been doing a lot on education and now, it is health”. He commended the efforts of the former President for his service to humanity, praying that God will continue to bless him. The Chief Promoter, COOFEHEF, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo declared that “we can’t be too old to do good and serve humanity”.
