The University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Students’ Union has inaugurated its Judicial Arm, in order to guarantee the necessary checks and balances in the running of the Union’s affairs.
Speaking at the occasion, the Acting Registrar, Mr. Adeleke Adeboye emphasized the important role of the Judiciary in any system of government, noting that it shouldered the responsibility of adherence of the rule of law and due process, which he said, was essential for equity fairness and justice.
He, therefore, tasked the Judiciary to dispense without prejudice, judgments that would sustain the existing peace in the University, declaring that “justice delayed is justice denied”.
The Acting Registrar, represented by the Senior Assistant Registrar (Junior Staff Estab. Matters), Mr. Adebayo Ogundimu, administered the oath on the students’ representatives.
The Students’ Union President, Mr. Taiwo Semighan applauded the uniqueness of the spirit of unionism in the University, which he said was unparalleled to the violent political terrain in other institutions.
The Students’ Union President thanked the University Management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, for its open-door policy and encouragement of free-flow communication between the students and Management.
Semighan urged the newly-sworn in members of Judiciary, to complement the existing peace in the University, by avoiding any act of favouritism, nepotism and selfishness while dispensing justice.
The sworn-in Justices are, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeal, Justice Agbelejoye Mutiu and the Chief Jurist of the Students’ Court, Justice Wahab Abdul Rahman.
Oloye Suaibu reiterated that with INHURD in their domain, Mawuko/Opeji had been given befitting recognition on the map of Ogun State, noting that the development had started yielding positive results on the socio-economic lives of the people.
He, however, implored the University to help in the construction of the major road, linking Mawuko to the Abeokuta township.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Secretary of the Association, Mr. Gbadamosi commended UNAAB for its efforts so far and solicited that indigenes of the community be considered for more appointments and patronage by the University.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, Professor Segun Lagoke, lauded the Association for accepting the location of INHURD in their jurisdiction.
He noted that the University had already embarked on the construction of an access road that will link INHURD to the Permanent Site at Alabata Road.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the responsibility of repairing the road that linked Mawuko to Abeokuta, was that of the government, as the University had no power to construct township roads.
Professor Balogun stressed that members of the community were free to apply for jobs and other benefits from the University, but warned that such will be treated on merit.
