The College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD) defeated the College of Engineering (COLENG) by 8-7, in a penalty shoot-out in the finals of the male category of the 2012 Inter-Collegiate Sports, played at the main bowl of the University’s Sports’ Centre.
Dotun Odukoya of the COLENG team had earlier netted the first goal in the 58thminute into the match, to put his team ahead while the COLAMRUD team fought to redeem the situation before Shola Oladeji was able to equalise, barely five minutes into the end of the second half.
The match was tension soaked as it ended 1-1 in regulated time; which made the winner to be decided through a penalty shootout.
Still at tie after five shots each apiece, in the first instance, the teams were subjected to ‘sudden death’ penalty session, of which Femi Fashina of COLENG, with Jersey no. 16 missed the net while Segun Jolagbade of COLAMRUD scored to arouse wide jubilation of fans at the pitch.
Speaking in a chat with FUNAAB Bulletin after the match, the Secretary-General of Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), Mr. Bayo Orodele described FUNAAB’s sporting facilities as fantastic.
On whether FUNAAB is fit to host NUGA, he said, “I have gone around; checking your facilities and there is need to put finishing touches, to be eligible to host NUGA Competitions”.
According to Biodun Alabi of Ogun State Broadcasting Television (OGTV), “This is what a complete University should look like. FUNAAB has done a lot in the aspect of taking University sports to the next level”, he added.
However, a retired Controller of Sports in FUNAAB, Mr. K.A Ladipo, was very elated to see the rapid transformation that sports had witnessed under the Vice-Chancellorship of Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun.
“I feel happy and gratifying to see the progress of sports developments in this great University”, he noted.
The Chairman, Sports’ Committee, Dr. Sam Wobo attributed the success recorded at the competition to the facilities that were put in place by the sport-loving Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun.
He noted that new games like Cricket and Hockey were introduced into the competition, adding that when ‘our Grandstand is finished, we will go for NUGA proper’.
The Director of Sports, Mr. Bayo Oluwatoki, said, “To whom much is given, much is expected. The Vice-Chancellor had made us proud by bringing out inherent talents from this competition”.
