In an engaging address at the 3rd Term 2023/2024 Family Meeting of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta International School (FUNIS), held on July 18, 2024, the Dean, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, emphasised the importance of productive social media usage for students, as she urged (FUNIS) students to manage their time on social media effectively.
Speaking at the School Auditorium, Prof. Kehinde delivered a lecture titled “Virtues and Vices of Social Media,” followed by an interactive session that explored the benefits and drawbacks of social media as a communication tool in today’s digital age.
Prof. Kehinde outlined several advantages of social media, such as increased exposure, the ability to listen and learn from online audiences, making meaningful connections, and practising self-control.
She also highlighted the potential downsides, admonishing the students to focus on the positive aspects.
She stressed the importance of minimising time spent on unproductive activities on social media, encouraging students to prioritise their studies to achieve success.
During the second lecture, titled “Incorruptible Girls in a Corrupt World,” Prof. Kehinde addressed the challenges faced by young girls.
Drawing from her own experience of losing her mother at the tender age of 12, she spoke about the power of determination and making positive choices to overcome adversity.
She outlined key factors for achieving life goals, including goal setting, avoiding distractions, staying focused, and the importance of mentorship.
Earlier, the Acting Principal, Mr. Olusola Ilori, welcomed the gathering, expressing gratitude to Prof. Kehinde for her participation despite her busy schedule. He enjoined the students to heed her advice.
The event also featured a cultural performance by the FUNIS Cultural Troupe, adding a vibrant touch to the proceedings.
