Dr. Sunday Amosu, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, has cautioned against drug abuse in the society. The medical expert defined drug as any chemical substance, which when taken into the body, alters its functions physically and psychologically. Dr. Amosu gave this definition during the 2019 Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting held at the TAL Event Centre, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

According to him, drugs may be taken both in the legal and illegal ways, adding that the key motivators for drugs were fun, pain, experimental use, and peer pressure among others. According to him, there are factors influencing drug usage such as price, environmental factors, cultural norms, and availability of drugs. He stated that constant abuse of drugs by individuals could result into some health consequences like suicide, depression or anxiety, schizophrenia, and motivational syndrome. Dr. Amosu further attributed high intake of drugs as one of the causes of poor performance of certain people in their places of work, adding that majority of drug users struggle with productivity and experience lack of concentration at work. He advised people to avoid taking excess drugs, stating that it is a sugar-coated poison that can cause death, injury or harm to their health.

Meanwhile, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. Ayodeji Sennuga said he was extremely proud of what the association had achieved over the years in the course of pursuing the association’s interests and values. Dr. Sennuga said the glory and success of the day was not from an individual but stemmed from collective efforts. Highpoint of the event was the presentation of a meritorious award to the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Kolawole Salako in recognition of his contribution to the growth of mental health in Nigeria. The Vice-Chancellor was represented at the occasion by the Director, Health Services of the University, Dr. Abiodun Amusan.
