The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako has lauded members of the Nigerian Association of University Women (NAUW), FUNAAB Branch, for involving students in their enlightenment programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by Dr. Florence Olowokere of the Department of Soil Science and Land Management, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) of the University, at the end-of-the-year programme organised by NAUW, appreciated the association for creating a platform for students of the University to learn more about the basic aspect of their academics.

He implored the students to avail themselves of the various opportunities that NAUW had provided for them, adding that their primary aim of coming to the University should not be compromised or disturbed.

He added that the event was aimed at helping them get necessary tips in preparing for their forthcoming examinations and imbibing good character. The guest speaker at the occasion, Prof. Bola Philips, while delivering her lecture on the topic, “Tips for Writing and Succeeding in Examinations”, observed that the best way to prepare for examination was to start reading early, by attending lectures, and having complete notes.

She stated that most students struggle to get the required marks in their examinations because of lack of preparations, stressing that they focus more on the end of semester examinations rather than paying adequate attention to continuous assessment tests. She, however, emphasised on the importance of note-taking during lectures, and reading hours, adding that students must try to complete all the reading reviews of their core courses throughout the semester, and to organise their notes early, to avoid last minute cramming.

Prof. Philips, who is of the College of Management Sciences (COLMAS), advised students to prioritise their time, set goals, make continuous assessment their first target, take good care of themselves, and pray, as the examination period approaches.

The NAUW President, Prof. Comfort Onifade had earlier stated that the association is interested in the development and growth of women and girls through the provision of quality education by training and giving out scholarships, grants, financing students’ projects, and giving awards to overall best female student, every year.

Prof. Onifade, who doubles as the Head of Department, Communication and General Studies, reiterated the commitment of NAUW to helping indigent students, who have little or nothing, stressing that they should never be ashamed of sharing their problems with others. She disclosed that the association had recently included male students in its programmes, noting that if boys were not well-trained, the girls that had been trained would be corrupted by the neglected boys, which may pose a great danger to the society.  She appreciated the University Management for its contributions towards the development of NAUW.

In their goodwill messages, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Babatunde Idowu; Registrar, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, represented by Mrs. Oluwakemi Banuso; University Librarian, Dr. Fehintola Onifade, represented by Dr. Bosede Ajiboye; Prof. Helen Bodunde; and Dr. Nworgu Onyekwere; all appreciated NAUW for its support and contributions over the years, while advising students to be focused, have a vision in life, and be disciplined.

Students of the Departments of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, and Agricultural Administration (AGAD), College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD) entertained guests with a cultural display.
