The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), on October 23, 2024, paid a Courtesy Visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Babatunde Kehinde to collaborate on expanding Sentinel Site Activities in Ogun State.

The Vice-Chancellor was represented at the meeting by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi.

The sentinel site hosted by FUNAAB is one of the two newly selected sites for the expansion of activities for malaria vector surveillance in Nigeria. The project is in collaboration with NMEP in conjunction with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and with support from Global Funds(GF).

The Programme was aimed at enhancing the monitoring of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors and improving vector control interventions in the state.

Since 2020, the NMEP has established sentinel sites in Ogun State to assess resistance levels of malaria vectors to various insecticides commonly used for malaria control in Nigeria. As part of its ongoing efforts, the NMEP plans to scale up these activities by introducing monthly routine malaria vector surveillance. The expansion would enable a more comprehensive understanding of vector bionomics, including feeding patterns, population dynamics, and behavioural adaptations to local environments.

Prof. Olufunmilayo Idowu of the Department of Pure and Applied Zoology would act as the Principal Investigator (PI) overseeing the routine surveillance at the sentinel sites.

While the NMEP will supply the necessary equipment for entomological surveillance, FUNAAB is expected to provide laboratory and insectary space, as well as other logistical support to ensure the smooth operation of the site. The site would also offer practical learning opportunities for students, allowing them to engage in routine monthly entomological surveillance activities.

The expanded activities at the sentinel site are slated to commence in November 2024, further supporting efforts to control malaria vectors in Ogun State and beyond.
