The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), on August 20, 2025, welcomed a delegation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for a verification and audit exercise under the newly introduced TETFund Centres of Excellence Programme.
Leading the team, Prof. Muhammed Waziri explained that the exercise sought to validate the capacity of selected Nigerian universities to run specialised postgraduate programmes locally. According to him, the initiative aimed to reduce the high cost of foreign training by strengthening indigenous institutions and nurturing homegrown experts.
During their tour, the officials expressed satisfaction with FUNAAB’s academic strength, research output, and infrastructure. They commended the University’s highly qualified academic staff, most of whom hold Doctoral degrees, and its impressive laboratories and advanced research equipment, describing FUNAAB’s facilities as superior to those found in many other institutions.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Dean, Postgraduate School, Prof. Gboyega Adebayo, appreciated TETFund’s consistent interventions in equipping the University. He noted that many of the facilities being inspected were products of TETFund’s support, adding that FUNAAB remained committed to maximising every grant for sustainable impact.
The verification exercise formed part of NUC’s broader efforts to strengthen universities with the potential to deliver world-class postgraduate training under the Centres of Excellence Programme. FUNAAB’s inclusion underscored the institution’s growing role in advancing national development in Agriculture, Sciences and Engineering.
