The origin of the Postgraduate School at University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) is traceable to the setting up of a Postgraduate Committee by the foundation Vice-Chancellor, Prof. N.O. Adedipe, in February 1992. The Postgraduate Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at that time, Professor G.M. Babatunde, undertook the preparation of guidelines and modalities for the establishment of a Postgraduate School and the commencement of postgraduate programmes. Based on the Committee’s report, Senate approved the establishment of the Postgraduate School on 16th December 1992. The first set of postgraduate students were admitted during the 1992/1993 and 1993/1994 academic sessions. Professor B.K. Ogunmodede was the foundation Dean of the Postgraduate School (1993 -1995).

The Postgraduate regulations underwent extensive revision to reflect new developments and programmes by the Postgraduate School Board, which were approved by Senate during 1998/99 academic session under Professor O.A. Osinowo’s leadership, who succeeded Professor Ogunmodede as Dean. He subsequently published the first edition of the Postgraduate Prospectus, reflecting the revised regulations. Professor O.J. Ariyo succeeded Prof. Osinowo in August, 2001 and compiled a new edition of the Postgraduate Prospectus which was revised and published during the period of Prof. S.O. Afolami as Dean Postgraduate School, , who took over from Prof. O.J. Ariyo in September, 2007. The Current Dean is Professor A.O. Enikuomehin who took over from Prof. S.O. Afolami in September, 2012.

Fifty-eight students were admitted at the inception of the Postgraduate School in 1993 and the number has gradually increased to about two thousand students. The Postgraduate School has since then awarded over nine hundred Diplomas, Master’s and Doctorate degrees through the Senate of the University. Currently, Postgraduate School runs Master’s and PhD programmes in Veterinary Medical Sciences and Engineering, in addition to the foundation programmes in basic agricultural and environmental sciences.

The emergence of Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun as Vice- Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, in 2007 has been a great blessing to the Postgraduate School in attaining its desired goals, one of which is the erection of the Postgraduate School Building which is scheduled for construction between the last quarter of 2009 and the third quarter of 2010. The Incumbent Vice-Chancellor is Professor Olusola Bandele Oyewole who assumed duty on 24th May, 2012.

Postgraduate education at UNAAB aims at imparting specialized knowledge and skills leading to the attainment by the student of a high level of expertise in a specific field of agriculture, forestry, engineering, veterinary medicine, environment or the basic sciences. These objectives are met through the institution of an appropriate mix of advanced courses, provision of excellent research and library facilities, as well as teaching and supervision by highly experienced postgraduate academic staff. In general, considerable effort is being made on a continuous basis by the University to provide a conducive environment for postgraduate studies.
